Notes and Translations

Nou Ke Akua Ke Aupuni O Hawai`i – To You, Oh Lord, the Kingdom of Hawai`i .

Makali`i – The Pleiades; key guiding stars for celestial navigation

Wa`a – voyaging canoe.

Hui Ana Na Moku – The Islands are United; a line from the Oli Wanana (Prophecy of Change)                                                 written by Queen Lili`uokalani.

Ke Akua Mana Loa – God Almighty.

Mana – Spiritual Energy.

Pele – Goddess of the Volcano/Creation.

Mauna Kea – The Sacred Mountain on the Island of Hawai`i ; the summit is the realm of Po reserved for the Gods.

The Anthem refers to Mauna Kea , the Temple of Our God "I."  In the Hawaiian language, "i" means simply "the highest."  The reference in the Anthem is to the one God who is supreme.  The reference is similar to the Old Testament "I am who I am.  The Alpha and Omega."

The Hawaiian people are a very spiritual people.  The ancient spiritual teachings identified the top of Mauna Kea , the highest mountain on the Island of Hawai`i, as the realm of Po , the Gods.  No human structures were built in that realm.  Priests entered the realm to make offerings only.

The Kingdom is dedicated to the preservation of ancient Hawaiian traditions and teachings.  The Kingdom of Hawai`i is the only expression of those traditions and teachings on this planet and, therefore, that expression will strongly influence the manifestation of the Kingdom.

At the same time, the Kingdom honors all traditions and teachings that provide the human family with the tools to evolve to a higher consciousness.  The Kingdom also honors the divinity of every individual whatever their beliefs.

Aumakua I`o – The Hawaiian Hawk Ancestor; symbol of higher consciousness.

Amakua Honu Ea – The Hawkbill Turtle Ancestor; symbol of the Earth.

Ke Akua Ā Me Kupuna – God and Ancestors/Elders.

Ku Ana Ka Pai`a Pohaku – The unity of all.

E Ola Mau Na Pulapula O Hawai`i Nei – Long live the off-spring of Hawai`i .

Aloha Ke Akua – God is love.
