The Kingdom of Hawai`i Restored

Nou Ke Akua Ke Aupuni O Hawai`i

Welcome to the web site of the restored Kingdom of Hawai`i. This site currently provides the basic documents related to the restoration of the Kingdom.

The story begins in 1893. At that time, the Kingdom of Hawai`i was an independent nation enjoying friendly relationships with numerous other nations, including the United States.

In that year, however, the United States Minister in Hawai`i conspired with sugar growers to overthrow the legitimate government of the Kingdom and create an illegal government.

The President of the United States at that time condemned the action as illegal and immoral. He also called for the restoration of Queen Lili`uokalani to her throne.

Unfortunately for the Hawaiian people, that restoration did not take place. The illegal government proceeded to work with allies in the United States Congress to annex Hawai`i to the United States. Even that action did not have enough support to take place legitimately, i.e. by constitutional amendment changing the boundaries of the United States, and, instead, took place by simple resolution.

At the time of the annexation,  practically every adult of Hawaiian ancestry in the islands signed a petition opposing that action. Queen Lili`uokalani issued a formal protest to the treaty of annexation between the United States and the illegal Provisional Government. She called for the withdrawal of the resolution.

From that time until now, the Hawaiian people have struggled to preserve their culture, language, and identity in the face of systematic suppression.

In 1993, the United States Congress passed and President Clinton signed a resolution apologizing to the Hawaiian people for the illegal overthrow of their government. The resolution is quite explicit in detailing the history and in acknowledging the illegal nature of the overthrow. The resolution also specifically acknowledges that the Hawaiian people never relinquished their sovereignty.

The resolution was, however, only an apology. The document was silent as to any steps the United States would take to redress the illegal act and restore Hawaiian sovereignty.

After passage of the Apology Resolution, efforts to restore the Kingdom quickened in the islands. Elders (kupuna) on the Island of Hawai`i took a series of steps to restore a kingdom government. Recently, they issued a Proclamation declaring the government restored and recognizing Edmund Kelii Silva, Jr. as King.

His Majesty in turn issued a Declaration of Independence delivered by messenger to the White House and the United Nations.

Having taken the formal steps necessary to initiate a restored government, the Kingdom is now ready to implement that restoration.
