LETTER TO PRESIDENT BUSH

The Honorable George W. Bush

President of the United States

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.

Washington, D.C. 25550

Dear President Bush:

Aloha o' kou, a warm greeting to you, your family, and the people of the United States.  May this letter find you in good health.

Enclosed please find, for your consideration, a copy of the Declaration of Independence of the indigenous people of Hawai'i.   I am sending it to you in my capacity as Ali'i Nui of my people.   I believe it to be entirely necessary and proper that you, as president of the United States, receive this Declaration of Independence from me.  Other copies of this document are being delivered by my government to leaders of nations throughout the world, as well as to Secretary General Kofi of the United Nations.

Mr. President, we the native people of Hawai'i love our blessed islands and pray desperately for their return.   We shall prevail.   However, I most confidently assure you that we shall employ only peaceful means to effect the return of our birthright.   It is my deepest wish, and that of my prime minister, Samuel Keolamauloa Kaluna, Jr., that you will do all within your power to restore the Hawaiian constitutional monarchy.

United States President Grover Cleveland, in an address to the U.S. congress, acknowledged that the taking of our beloved islands was wrongfully done through the device of the American military force.   More recently, President William J. Clinton affirmed the fact of this injustice when, on November 3, 1993, he signed into law Public Law 103-150, The Apology Resolution of The Joint Resolution 18, 103d Congress.

In this context of the United States' historical recognition of the prominent role it played in overthrowing the lawful Hawaiian constitutional monarchy, I implore you to endorse the principle of self-determination for the indigenous people of Hawai'i, and to support our Declaration of Independence.  Mahalo nui lo'a, and may Ke Akua Mana Lo'a bless this endeavor.

My warmest regards,
